Marriage Preparation Counselling
Prepare for marriage with clarity, understanding, and intention

A structured, therapist-led process to help you understand your relationship clearly and prepare for the realities of life together.
Marriage is one of the most meaningful commitments two people can make. While love often brings couples together, it is not what sustains a relationship on its own.
What sustains a marriage is how two people understand each other, communicate effectively through their differences, navigate challenges together, and continue to choose each other over time.
Hirsch Therapy's 6-session Marriage Preparation course is designed to cover key areas that will help you build a marriage with clarity, understanding, and intention.
OR
Many couples prepare for the wedding, but not for the marriage
It is common for couples to invest significant time and energy into planning a wedding, while giving far less attention to preparing for the life that follows.
Yet marriage introduces new dynamics that are often not fully explored in advance such as:
-
Differences in communication styles
-
Expectations around roles and responsibilities
-
Approaches to conflict
-
Family influences and boundaries
-
Financial decision-making
-
Emotional and physical intimacy
Without intentional reflection, these differences can surface later in ways that feel unexpected or difficult to navigate.
Marriage preparation is not about anticipating every possible challenge.
It is about developing awareness, alignment, and the ability to navigate those challenges together when they arise.

A Structured, Therapist-Led Marriage Preparation Process

Hirsch Therapy's Marriage Preparation Counselling is a therapist-led marriage preparation process designed to help you understand your relationship clearly and prepare for what life together actually requires.
You will be guided through a series of focused sessions that explore the areas that fundamentally shape long-term relationships with space to reflect, ask questions, and make sense of how the two of you function together.
This is not about completing a checklist.
It’s about preparing for the reality of a shared life.
Most marriage preparation programmes are facilitator-led.
They typically follow a set curriculum and guide couples through general concepts and discussions.
At Hirsch Therapy, we offer a therapist-led marriage preparation.
This means:
-
That you are guided by a qualified Couples Therapist.
-
The structure is intentional, but the process is responsive to your unique relationship
-
Important moments can be explored more deeply when needed, and
-
You receive professional input on your actual dynamics, not just general advice
You are not just learning about relationships.
You are understanding your relationship.
What Makes Us Different
Therapist-Led versus Facilitator-Led
Programme Structure (6 Sessions)
Each session in this course is intentionally designed to build on the one before it, creating a steady and meaningful progression rather than a collection of disconnected conversations.
Before the course begins, you and your partner will complete a pre-course relationship assessment. This is not about labelling your relationship, but about beginning the reflective process, helping you surface blind spots early, identify areas of alignment and tension, and allowing the sessions to be tailored to what matters most to both of you.
As the course comes to a close in Session 6, you will work together on a post-course relationship agreement. This is not a binding contract, but a shared commitment to continue investing in your relationship with intention. It is designed to evolve alongside you, reflecting the reality that relationships are not static, but something you actively grow and shape over time.
Session 1:
The Foundation of Your Marriage
Move beyond assumptions and ideals to clarify the kind of marriage you are intentionally creating together, including your values, expectations, and shared vision.
Session 2:
Emotional Safety
Learn how to create a sense of emotional safety while developing a deeper understanding of each other’s inner world, needs, and emotional patterns.
Session 3:
Conflict & Repair
Reframe conflict as an opportunity for connection by understanding your patterns of escalation, and learning how to repair and reconnect after difficult moments.
Session 4:
Building a Life Together
Explore the practical and often unspoken dynamics that shape a shared life, including finances, roles, family influences, and how power is experienced and negotiated.
Session 5:
Intimacy & Connection
Understand what sustains emotional and physical intimacy, and how to intentionally nurture closeness even as life becomes busy, demanding, or routine.
Session 6:
Navigating the Future
Bring everything together to reflect on your growth, prepare for future challenges, and create a shared commitment to continue building your relationship with intention.
A Guided Process With Support Between Sessions –
Our Very Own Marriage Prep Workbook
A key feature of this programme is the Hirsch Therapy Marriage Preparation Workbook and two custom notebooks, provided to every couple as part of the course.
The workbook is designed to:
-
Complement each session with structured reflection exercises
-
Guide conversations between sessions
-
Help you process insights at your own pace
-
Deepen understanding beyond what is discussed in-session
-

Rather than relying solely on what is covered during sessions, the workbook allows you to continue engaging with the material in a thoughtful and meaningful way outside of sessions.
The workbook activities are not compulsory. But couples who engage with it often:
-
Gain clarity more quickly
-
Communicate more effectively between sessions
-
Experience deeper outcomes from the process

How the process comes together
Each session builds progressively, supported by:
-
In-session guided dialogue facilitated by the therapist
-
Workbook exercises completed between sessions
-
Personal reflections captured in your notebooks
This combination ensures that the learning is not only understood intellectually, but also explored, internalised, and applied practically within your relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the this therapy?
This programme is facilitated within a therapeutic framework, but it is not traditional therapy focused on treating clinical concerns. It is a structured process designed to support reflection, understanding, and preparation for marriage.
Do we need to complete work outside of sessions?
It’s not compulsory but highly recommended. However, it is highly recommended, as it plays an important role in deepening the overall experience of the programme.
The workbook has been expertly crafted and designed to supplement and enhance each session, providing structured prompts that help you reflect individually and engage in more meaningful conversations together.
Couples who make use of the workbook often find that they gain greater clarity, retain insights more effectively, and are able to apply what they learn in a more practical and integrated way within their relationship.
Ultimately, the workbook is there to support you, not to add pressure. It is designed to help you get the most out of the process.
What if we are already experiencing conflict?
If there are significant unresolved issues or ongoing relational distress, couples therapy may be more appropriate before engaging in this programme. This course is best suited for couples who are able to participate collaboratively.
How can we best prepare for each session?
There is no special preparation required.
What matters most is that both of you come willing to engage openly and honestly in the process.
Some couples find it helpful to:
-
List down any questions you may have for your therapist.
-
Complete the recommended workbook exercises and bring your reflections to the session.
-
Remember to have fun and enjoy the process!
The goal is not to “perform well,” but to be present and engaged in a way that feels genuine to you.
Can these sessions be covered by government subsidy?
Marriage preparation programmes offered through certain providers may be eligible for government subsidies.
Hirsch Therapy’s marriage preparation process is a private, therapist-led service, and is not part of subsidised schemes.
Couples who choose this process are typically looking for a more personalised and in-depth experience, guided by a trained therapist.
Can this be covered by insurance?
In most cases, marriage preparation is not covered by insurance, as it is not classified as medical or clinical treatment. If you have a specific policy, you may wish to check directly with your provider. If needed, we can provide a receipt for your records.
